In the mythology that we were to create a play from for Modern Religious Experience, I depicted Demeter in the myth called "The Creation of the Seasons: Demeter and Persephone." Demeter is the Goddess of the Earth, who is in charge of all living things on the planet. The myth itself is about a Persephone, an innocent daughter of Demeter, getting kidnapped by Hades. Demeter, distraught, refuses to let anything grow on Earth unless Hades gives back her daughter. However Hades tricks her daughter into eating pomegranate seeds, which forces her to stay in the Underworld. Zeus then decrees because she ate only a few, she must spend a few months with Hades as his queen, and the rest of the time she can be with her mother. Thus, depicting how the seasons were created.
The story answers the question of how and why the seasons were created. In ancient Greek times, they did not have the technology to know about the Earth itself. In this story, I feel that the virtue is maternal love. In the myth, it constantly talks about Demeter's suffering without her daughter. In the story, the moral is love. In the myth, it talks about several different types of love. The types of love include Demeter's maternal love for her daughter, Zeus's brotherly love for Hades, and Hades's dangerous love for Persephone. In this story, I believe its telling you to be careful, because you never know what people are truly thinking. This story teaches you that nothing is truly ever perfect after something tragic happens. The tragedy will always be a part of you, and you have nothing more to do then to move on from it. This was what Demeter and Persephone had to do in the story.
